Facebook has admitted spying on its users. Throughout the period of 4 years, various front camera shots were taken without the user's permission, with various sound bites also being recorded without knowledge of the user.
Facebook called the 'data collection' a 'reasonable attempt to further connect with out audiences'. England Tonight looked at the code from 60 smartphones which had the Facebook app installed. The results were shocking - whenever a user pressed 'like' or reacted to a post on the app, a front camera still was taken, then passed on to a server, which analysed the facial emotion shared by the user. The app would also detect whenever a user started a discussion about buying a certain object/service. Adverts were then pushed about that subject to the user. The app even went as far as to FAKE battery readings to fool the user into thinking the app wasn't operating in the background.
The app could also see what the user was doing on other apps, including browser usage, text messages, phone call records and photo galleries.
Kevin Moscow, Facebook's chief engineer acknowledged the 'data collection'. In a statement to England Tonight, Mr Moscow said
Jenny Cowlin, 44, from Dunstable, branded the site 'disgusting' and that she 'wouldn't even touch it with a BARGE POLE'.

"I would like to thank England Tonight for their investigation into this matter. During the period from 2012 - 2016, we collected data from our users' handsets, in order to gain a better understanding about how they use our app and services, as well as how they engaged with advertisers and their promotions. We cannot comment on the collection of data regarding text messages, camera snapshots, phone call records or any other matter."
