New legislation means that you will soon have to pay a licence for every device you own, it has been announced. The new legislation puts in place a 'Computer Licence', which is similar to a 'TV Licence'. If you own a computer, phone, smart television (which isn't connected to any terrestrial stations), smart fridges, bluetooth speakers or tablet, you'll have to pay for a licence for them, separately, each month. Kevin Mansfield, from Computer Licencing, explains the changes. "The computer industry in the UK is going through a huge change at the moment. The sites you use are evolving, the people you meet online and the things you buy are constantly expanding and evolving. We're charging users of electronic devices to fund improvement works to local infrastructure." There is a tariff for how much you'll have to pay per month; The charge applies to all electronic devices, whether they're working or not, and there is a court summons and a maximum fine of £600 if you don't pay. The laws come into effect next week.
